Fisher Family Vacation 2013

Yes...it's time to begin planning our next "Two Week" vacation! Now of course Rich and I know where we will go...but the kid's DO NOT. How much fun can we have with this? Well just wait and see.
Rich will be giving each Family one clue a Month and of course there are rules, keep reading...
         "The Destination Game"
Each Family will receive one clue on the first day of each month-
You may NOT ask anyone for help-
You will have 24 hours to submit your guess-
Only one guess Per Couple Per Month-
We wish you luck
The next vacation had to be changed a bit, since Rich will be in Afghanistan until the end of August; we had to change the month to September. Of course I had to run this by Craig and Trista since it will effect the beginning of the new school year for Shealynn and Brady. It's a good thing our trips are educational!
It's going to be an exciting year with a lot of new changes, I think it will be interesting for me to attempt to pull this all off! I'll just need to try to keep focused on "one day at a time" after all- it's just another move with a deployment. Aye...another example of why you should never say never.

It's Almost 2012

I know it's been a long time since I've written in my Blog; however in my defense I've been very sick! I still have a bit of a cough but not like earlier. Being sick for my most favorite time of the year was terrible! Rich and I missed out on all the party's and get-together s. Every year we Host a Christmas Eve Dinner and invite the Marines...however this year there was an "incident" two days prior and our Marines were placed on lock-down. We ended up having a more interment dinner for five which turned out to be a wonderfully relaxed evening for all.
We didn't get to Skype with the kids this year; Chris had duty over Christmas, so he and Marissa took Charlotte to experience Christmas with snow a bit early at their favorite camp in Big Bear! NO Wi-Fi to Skype but they did take lots of pictures for us.
Craig and Trista had just moved into their new house and couldn't locate their Motum...but we were able to talk with everyone on the phone.
Corey stayed in Va. this year visiting with friends; I think it's a bit difficult for the boys not to be able to get together for Christmas but they at least were able to talk!
We have just two more days until we begin 2012. I have mixed emotions about Celebrating this year, half of me wants to get it over with and the other half would like to skip to 2013! Here's hoping that Richard's year in Afghanistan will be Safe and Quick!!

Home

After a Wonderful vacation we made it home safely late Monday night. I plan to post pictures as soon as Rich gets a moment to download them, he was back to work Tuesday morning and last night we had a "Farewell Dinner" to attend. Tonight- we're off to pick up Mikey!
While we were gone, we missed the Onion Festival...a bit sad about that since it was so much fun last year. The good news is that the Christmas Markets are open and I "ALWAYS" love going to them. Rich and I are hoping to attend the Nuremberg Market this year.
As with every vacation- we came home to several messages and Rich had a pile of work and e-mails to go through; reality sat back in last night as he told me about the "5" e-mails from Afghanistan. They we all about classes and final preparations to complete before his departure..... "I don't want to talk about that right now"
The fun pictures we received were of Charlotte eating her First Thanksgiving Dinner..soooo funny! We could tell that she really loved/enjoyed her meal!!! AND....we got a video of her 9 month little self  WALKING! She was so cute and reminded me so much of her Daddy; I just cried and kept watching it over and over. In MY MIND, it doesn't seem so long ago when Rich and I were dancing to the little footsteps of our boy's day to day- now to watch them making their way and attaining their own Families and Dreams...."It's just an incredible gift for us"
Craig, Chris, and Corey; We love you so very much and we're so grateful to have each one of you to call "OUR SON'S"
Our Family is what we're Thankful for EVERY DAY.

Our Trip

We will begin by spending the night in Rome. While there we will tour the Vatican, coliseum, Rome at twilight and the underground. The next morning we will begin our {10 Night Eastern Mediterranean Cruse on the Celebrity Equinox}
Our ports of call will be:
Sicily [Messina}Italy
Valletta Malta
Crete Greece
Rhodes Greece
Ephesus Turkey
Athens Greece
Naples Italy
We're both excited about the trip-we'll be able to explore and just spend some uninterrupted time together. Perhaps I should make a list of things to talk about...although I'm sure Rich would tell you that I'm never at a loss for words! LOL
Seriously though, it's going to be wonderful to "run away together" As you can see by the dates, we'll be gone during Thanksgiving this year but I'll survive not preparing a large dinner- although we will miss being with family. "Thank you Linda and Chris for your wonderful invitation. I know you'll both enjoy a wonderful weekend with Chris, Amy and Johna!
Another piece of exciting news: My childhood friend Betti will be coming to Switzerland in April, for a LONG overdue visit!!! Like most of our Graduating class, Betti and I spent all of our school years together from First grade! Like most small towns; by the time we hit 6th grade we were more like "brothers and sisters" Anyway, Betti secured her ticket last night. I'm just so excited and will try to have everything planned before she gets here!

Happy November

Now before I tell you about "this" month, lets address "last" month; {Yesterday} to be specific.. What in the world is America becoming? What is going on? Did they put something in your Fruit Loops?? CHANGING-CANCELLING Halloween for a more "convenient" Day??? Are you kidding me!!?? Well why don't we just change the whole calendar... And go ahead and add years while your at it! {That way I can be 21 again} Let's see.... "this day just doesn't seem to be working out, it's a bit inconvenient for a lot of people, so let's just change it to next week"
Gosh, I remember when I was younger, if someone had told me that Halloween was off..I would have been crushed; LOL We always had such a good time, and if there was school the next day- all the better! Does anyone remember stuffing their pockets with candy and trying to sneak a piece in class? Growing up in Maine I can tell you that we've experienced Halloween with tons of snow on the ground.. that was when we would add layers and pillows to our Hobo Costume after all; we couldn't wear a coat over our hard work of putting everything together! It was always an added bonus if the power went out. Everything just felt more scary...we would place our lit up pumpkins on the front porch and my Mother would light the house with candles and gasoline lanterns. As for Trick Or Treating? Well, we would grab a flashlight and be on our way!
I hope everyone enjoyed their All Hallows Eve.
Now on to November, I think this will be another quickly passing Month. Rich and I will be taking a "much welcomed" Vacation; which I will tell you about tomorrow. This weekend we will be attending the Marine Corps Ball. This event is always a wonderful evening and we always look forward to the celebration, I should also mention that the MC for this year is Richard!!  I could say that I'm looking forward to watching him attempt to pull this off; however in reality, I know he'll do an "incredible" job!! My cousin Linda and her husband Chris will arrive to join us this year- so I know it will be a very fun evening!

Corey

We received word last night that Corey has Accepted a Job with the:
Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Ashborn Va. as a Research Assistant in Electron Micro Graphs. You can check out the Institute at:"www.hhmi.org" It's a very impressive Medical institute where Corey will not only have the ability to study what he loves; but will also meet world renowned scientist from all over....{the best and the brightest in the field}!! Oh, another "perk" if you will, of the job is that they will pay Ten Thousand Dollars a year toward his Grad School!! Needless to say, Corey is on Cloud Nine; and we are all right there with him! He begins his new job on Monday and has promised to call and tell all- so I will keep you up to date.
We were able to Skype with Craig, Trista and the kid's Sunday evening {for us, morning for them} Their all doing fine with the new School year and Trista is doing well with the pregnancy, Reese is expected in January. I wonder if she'll be another double of Craig?.
Chris and Marissa are doing well, we are still waiting on pictures of their reconstructed living room; however last evening Rich and I received a Tex message- it was a video of Charlotte "WALKING" to her Daddy attended by a toy. Of course I only watched it about 12 times and might have shed a tear or two....she's just growing up so fast {for me anyway}.
This weekend is once again the Chestnut Festival-

With 270 stands, 35'000 visitors and 7 tons of chestnuts eaten in two days, the Fête de la Châtaigne has become, in only a few years, one of the most popular events of the autumn in Valais. It takes place every year, the week-end following the end of the famous Foire du Valais in nearby Martigny. Magic recipe A varied open air market of 270 stands, the Wine Village of Fully Grand Cru and 6 chestnut-corners to taste the famous “brisolée” (chestnuts grilled over a fire), are the basic ingredients. Spice it up with some guided visits, free excursions, concerts, entertainment for children and adults and you will have the magic recipe of this major event. In 2010, Fully will host the 16th edition of the Fête de la Châtaigne, but the love story between Fully and this tasteful fruit has lasted for about 800 years…

So, if your in the area- this Festival should be placed on your "to-do-list"

October

Does anyone else feel the "end of the year" picking up speed? Wow, it's almost Mid October, Halloween is almost here, Thanksgiving is just around the corner and we're only 80 days from Christmas!! In fact- we are already receiving notices of "Deadline Dates" for mailing Christmas gifts to arrive in time Stateside.
Weather wise; it's getting much cooler now. Living in Europe also means that you do not get your heat turned on until the temperature has been below 60 for 5 consecutive days. So the smell of wood fires in the evening and early mornings are becoming a welcomed aroma. One that many of us grew up with in New England. "Come on SNOW!!!"
This weekend will bring the "Official" beginning of the Holidays {at least for the Military living in Europe}, The Holiday Bazaar in Heidelberg. Rich and I attended last year and I purchased absolutely nothing, perhaps this year will be more productive. We have already decided what to get the kids...I'll tell you all about it AFTER December 25th LOL.
Our Calendar seems to be filling up quickly for the next three months. In fact I called my cousin Linda the other day and we went through "daily books" to ensure we would save time to get together. Although we're in the same part of the world- we are still "overnight" visitors...but it's like a pajama party whenever we get together!! Oh,... maybe this time we'll freeze the guys underwear! {always fun times}

Mountain Marathon Cup

It's time for me to tell you about what my husband was up to- and No...it wasn't bad!
Rich began training last Fall for the "Mountain Marathon Challenge". He had to run Three of Four Mountain Races. He chose the:
June 11th "Lichtenstein Alpine Marathon
July 9th Zermatt Mountain Marathon
Sept 10th Jungfrau Mountain Marathon
The highest altitude was, 8,480ft! For those of you who run marathons you know how difficult these runs were. He completed these runs with an average time of 6.5  While a normal flat marathon would only take him 4hrs.
Needless to say the training alone was tough- but he did it and finished what he started!! This was the first time he has ever attempted running such a challenge and he did have a few..."I must be out of my mind" kind of days, I'm very proud of his determination to power through. If you were to ask him now if he'd do it again, I think he would tell you No. But I think if he had another opportunity to do something that he had never done before-- he would. "In a Heartbeat"

Time will tell

I went to talk with my Dr. yesterday morning, thank god he was very "up to date" on my issues. I began my new medication yesterday and he told me by the end of the week I should begin to feel "normal" again. Thank you Betti, for your wonderful letter..needless to say it made me cry....
Rich found out that his replacement here in Bern will be arriving in June which means we'll be leaving here early June 2012. Our new departure date is good since he was able to sign up for an extra class that he need's at FSI. Just another reason to believe that everything happens for a reason; two months early is a gift. Work has been busy this End of Summer- I think in October things will slow down a bit until after the Holidays.
Since Friday is the First Day of Fall, I've decided that it's time to re-decorate. Time to pack away the Summer fabrics, candles, decorations and pull out the warmer cozier fabrics and colors of Fall. It's also a great time to re-arrange wardrobes, out with the old and in with the new {again}.

Roller-Coaster Of Life

September is running away from me and October is quickly approaching! I remember my Mother telling me that the older you get, the quicker time passes-- I thought she was just being dramatic; Now I agree. Oh how I wish that I could pick up the phone and talk with her again- I wish that I could remember all of the thing's she told me about life beyond raising children or perhaps I just wish that I had listened with more intensity. I wonder if there will ever be a time when I won't long for her advice........Probably not.
Wondering what brought this on???
Hormones, menopausal... "what the hell??"How old was Mom when this happened to her? What did she do, how did she handle it, is there a short cut?? What's life like on the other side of menopause?
I'm Hot/I'm Cold-Happy/Crying. I feel like I'm on an emotional roller-coaster that I've never rode before with a ton of twists and turns. If I didn't know any better- I'd swear I was expecting. "I just want to get off this crazy ride- I'm not good at it. I think I'll be doing a lot of research on this...
Well, enough talk on "that" subject.
As you know, Rich will be going to Afghanistan in August 2012. I've been trying to decide what to do while he's gone; I was going to stay here in Switzerland- but because of my Diplomatic Status the Swiss Government turned down that request. Now I need to decide between two options:
Move to the US for a year OR Take a job with the Department and go to Afghanistan too. Obviously it's not an easy decision and I need to do my homework; but that's what's going on in our part of the world right now.

Time

Yesterday was a wonderful day spent with great friends. Everyone was interested about how our visit went with our Kid's; that one question made me realize that while it was so "wonderful" to see them and have them together... I didn't get to do with them what we had planned and wanted to do. "SIT and TALK" We knew it was going to be a bit crazy with 10 people in the house, six extra adults, one baby and three kids; but in my mind I had it all worked out! We would tour during the day, while I made dinner the children would have their bath- after dessert and clean-up the little ones would go to bed and we {the adults} would sit around the fire pit outside and "talk" try to catch up on the last two years in person. WOW....was that idea so "NOT" Instead the evenings were so chaotic we couldn't sit and have a conversation to save our life's! Before I knew it we were off to Scotland for a week;  we were able to meet-up for dinner in the Evenings but "trying to have a conversation" sitting in loud rooms at very long and sometimes two tables was impossible.
Rich and I didn't even know that our oldest son had been accepted to the Police Academy Pre- Course until the night before they left to return home.
Now, don't get me wrong...I know we could have just grabbed them one by one and made them sit and talk to us but we wanted some of the past of "wanting" to sit and talk.....
With the "ONE EXCEPTION" of our Fisher Family Vacation every two years; and with the Families growing I think it will be best to keep the "HOME" visits on a {one Family at a time} bases.. We love our young men and their families very much and with as much traveling as we have to do, we really look forward to having a few special moments with each and every one of them!

BBQ

A partly sunny day here in Switzerland, giving us great day for an end of summer BBQ. The menu is simple today with marinaded boneless/skinless chicken breast, pizza and curry brots along with baked beans and large green garden salad. Of course chips, dip, stuffed jalapenos and deserts.
I hope everyone has a great day and is able to enjoy spending time with friends/family
Goodby Summer. Now really looking forward to the Fall and Winter!!!!

This just in

As you know we have been waiting on news from Washington to find out if I'll stay here in Bern while Rich goes to Afghanistan. Because of Diplomatic Status; the answer is No- Rich will be posted back to DC with duty in Kandahar. SO my friends- the search is on. If anyone knows where there is a nice "furnished" two bedroom/ two bath that will accept one small 9yo dog, that will be available in July 2012 Please let me know!!
In the mean time I will be "packing up" again after each Holiday and marking my boxes {Storage} or {New Zealand} Since Wellington is a furnished post the only things we're allowed to bring are items of comfort and things to make the house feel like "our" home. For sure my kitchen, our bed, photos and television. I'm very grateful for our I-PAD's; we no-longer have to pack and carry around books! Two thing's I'm really good at are packing and home decorating; in fact we will be able to enjoy our New Zealand home for THREE WHOLE YEARS!!! LOL

Storms of life

Today I hope everyone will take just a moment to say a prayer for those who are not as fortunate.
I wish you all a safe and happy life.

Onward

With the kids back to their own lives and routines, I find myself in a very loud quite house. I really do enjoy having the kids home; even if it's just for a minute.
Rich and I attended our First "Retirement Dinner" last night. One of the Men who works for Rich is moving on to spend some time traveling and just enjoying life. Gifts and presentations will be given at the Embassy Farewell next week.
For those of you not on Facebook, I will share the news about "our" future. Rich will be going to Kandahar Afghanistan next summer for a one year assignment. "word is not in yet on whether I'll stay here in Bern or be sent back to DC. Our follow on assignment is: Wellington New Zealand, we'll live there for three years. Because New Zealand is a furnished post, We'll need to take minimal belongings- just enough of our things to personalize our home. We always take our bed, a few pictures, television and my kitchen..."have to have my kitchen"!! We'll have to have everything else put in storage, and give up our SUV since it cannot be shipped; so not only will we need to get used to a different car- we'll also have to get use to the driver being on the passenger side AND driving on the Left! Any bets on which one of us will "forget" first?

The Rest of Vacation

After the Race, we enjoyed a nice evening with dinner at the "Last Pit Stop" Rich had made reservations weeks in advance. It was not easy to just walk in somewhere and get a table for 15 plus a highchair; but we had wonderful meals and great service where-ever we ended up. The rest of the week was spent taking tours and sightseeing with two exceptions; one evening was spent watching the famous Military Tattoo-- It was a beautiful show and we had great seats, in fact the evening would have been perfect if it weren't for sitting in the pouring rain and cold weather. We were not allowed to open our umbrellas but we could purchase ponchos! When I left I was soaked through and my clothes felt very heavy. I think everyone had a warm shower that evening!
Our last evening was a special Original Scottish 5 course Dinner complete with Entertainment. I think everyone agreed that it was the best evening of the trip; in fact "The Fisher Table was the last to leave!!
As soon as Rich gets the time to download more pictures- I'll post them for you.
After returning to Bern, the kids {minus Corey} had just three days to enjoy Switzerland before returning to their respective homes. Since they've left- I've cleaned all the rooms and gathered up the items that were misplaced during packing. I'm not exactly sure who a couple of the items belong to, but since I haven't received an answer from anyone "claiming" them; I'll do my best to guess who to send them to.

Fisher Family

Where to begin... Corey was the first to arrive here in Switzerland, three days later Craig and Chris arrived with their families. Everyone was full of excitement and wonder. Rich had set-up a meet and greet for our "group" with our friends and the Marines from the US Embassy Bern; so on August 4th we hosted a Happy Hour that went well into the evening. "we have some wonderful friends here and we were so happy to have everyone meet"
Having only a few days to tour Switzerland- we were off at 4:30 AM on August 6th to begin our Fisher Family Vacation 2011 in Edinburgh Scotland. Once there we met up with Corey's Girlfriend Katrina "who, in her words experienced the flight from Hell; poor thing- she's very tall and as many of you know, they just don't give any leg room; "not to bad you say?" Well add in a reclined seat in front of you that kept jabbing her knees and a little one sitting behind her that kept banging her head with his toy! [ I'm so glad that Rich and I are able to up-grade when we fly!!!!!]  Anyway, after loading three large van cabs with luggage AND all of us {we're 14 people at this point} Off to the B&B we went, to get settled in and meet-up with "First" Richards Parents coming in from Atlanta, and second our Niece Amy, her husband Chris and their two children who were driving in from England. SO....EVERYONE got moved into their rooms, did a bit of sight seeing and we all met up for dinner. After arriving back to our rooms; I assure you a good nights sleep was looked forward to by all!
Then came Sunday morning.... after breakfast my Mother in Law set off to go to Catholic Mass {something she does every Sunday No-Matter where she is} Anyway someone told her it was just up the street so when she got back we would meet up with the kids and enjoy a tour. {you know what they say about even the best laid plans....} So true on that Sunday of August 7th. Rich, his Dad and I were showered, dressed and waiting in the Breakfast Room for Mom, she was running a bit late but not more than 30 minutes. Well minutes turned to hours and as our worry became fear for what might have happened to her we called the Police to report her missing. I couldn't believe any of this as I sat listening to my Father in Law describe what Mom was wearing, No, she didn't have a cell phone, not sure if she remembers the name of the B&B, Yes, she has cash, no, she's never done this before. It was like being on a bad TV show. Hours turned into Afternoon and then Evening, the Police were calling and or coming by every hour to see if we had heard from her. My Father in Law was going from panic to comedy...."If she walks in here with shopping bags- she's in BIG TROUBLE! Finely at 10PM that evening we got the call we had been waiting for, "they found her" she had been walking ALL DAY without taking a break, all the buildings looked alike and she just ended up walking further away. She had walked into a Hostel and asked if she could use their phone to call the Police to find out if "anyone" might be looking for her. The police phoned us and Dad was able to speak with her on the phone; with a great deal of relief in his voice, I heard him say; It's alright just get in the cab and come home. We'll talk when you get here. It wasn't until she walked through the front door that we felt safe, happy and relived. Tears of love and relief. By the way throughout the rest of the week wherever we went Mom always spoke up to say "I SAW THAT!!!!!!" I can Assure you that it will be a long time before Mom gets to live this one down!
Tune in tomorrow for the Amazing Race.

Almost

Just two more days until Corey arrives, and six more for the rest of them! We are very excited for our children to arrive safely!
Speaking of: Officer Chris Fisher had an intense night while at work. After his buddy got into a pursuit; Chris found their sawed off shotgun,- they had attempted to load it 6 times to shoot at the Officer but thank god the shell wasn't seated in the barrel correctly so when they weren't able to lock it in, they decided to throw it out of the vehicle. Chris said that the round was "crimped" from being pinched every time they had tried to close the barrel. My FIRST thought; Praise God!! "Please continue to watch over our children and keep them safe"

I Know

It's been a long time since I've posted anything, however in my defense I have been very busy!
Our world became intense when Rich received a request to accept his next job in Afghanistan, needless to say we spent hours and days talking, doing web searches, going over everything an assignment like this would entail. After a few weeks "they needed an answer"..Rich tossed his name in the hat; and he will report next Summer.
Today our son Corey will take his MCAP. I called him just a short time ago to wish him well and of course to let him know how much we love him and how Proud we are of him no-matter where his future will take him! Rich and I have been blessed with "THREE" of the most wonderful young men in the world. I couldn't image our life without them, Craig, Chris and Corey are truly our best accomplishments in this life. We would both do it again a million years over.
We will be hanging out this evening, waiting for Corey's call when he's finished. I know Family and Friends are saying an extra prayer for him today...We treasure your love.

Update

Thank you everyone, for thinking about Mikey. He is doing much better and will be finished with his medication's soon.
Now: if your on Facebook, you've already heard the news. If not then let me fill you in! Richard received his new assignment for August 2012-2013...he is being sent to Kandahar Afghanistan! We will have a follow-on assignment within a few months. After talking it over- we decided it best for me to remain in Switzerland. Rich will be getting some leave and it will be better if he doesn't have to spend most of it traveling. We do have a lovely home here, we're comfortable with our surroundings, I know my way around and have very good friends to keep me busy and lend support. Given our Military life; I can say we HAVE done this before..the exception this time is that I won't have any of my boys with me. The house will be empty except for Mikey...

Mikey

Our three day weekend consisted of tagging each other to take care of our sick little boy! He insisted on sleeping on a lap at all times. After a very "LONG" weekend trying to keep him comfortable with what medication we had for him, we were able to take him into the Dr's this morning. Poor baby has an infection in his Pharynx along with secondary warning signs. Mikey had to have a shot and was sent home along with three other medications and orders not to have anything except Black Tea for the next 24 hours.
He is currently asleep {from the injection} and seems to be sleeping comfortably.
I'd better take advantage of my free lap and get my house cleaned up, hopefully I'll even be able to get to the market this afternoon.

Plans

Our vacation plans are going well, everything is set, tickets are all purchased and rooms have been reserved. I'm still working on our menu and sleeping arrangements for here in Switzerland but expect no problems. As of Monday- we have an order coming our way for Baby Charlotte. Everything will be ready for her when she arrives! I also have thing's ready for Shealynn and Brady, I think our Grandparent status will be official by the time we move to our new post....we'll have a shipment just for kids!
It's another rainy day over here but it's still beautiful, I just got home from being downtown and the walk was nice/refreshing. It's one of those "cozy days" where you just want to curl-up with a cup of tea and a good book.

Sometimes

This morning after making brownies and cleaning the house, I did something. Now- try to understand " I HATE BUGS" All of them! There was a fly in the kitchen this morning that was driving me absolutely crazy throughout baking and cleaning...I kept trying to smack him with no luck. By the time I began to vacuum, this fly was really on my "hit list". Unable to swat the little $@*^...I found myself using the only thing in my hand... the vacuum cleaner! That's right, I was waving it around in the air, trying to suck the thing up; and NOT successfully! While running around the room trying to end his freedom of flight I caught notice of myself in the mirror. After a moment of quick reflection- I just began to laugh at the site of it all; Is this what my time has come down to? Have I really gone to this extent to get a FLY out of my house? Well after the laughter, my thought was YES!!! It is! So with an open door and the use of a magazine...some of you will be happy to know that the fly is now free- outside flying around happily. (Until "that is" he flies into someones windshield)

A nice week for Rich at work! With the long weekend and a Swiss Holiday tomorrow; he only had a three day work week. however he did keep busy and was able to finish everything on his "to-do list"..{he made it- not me}
We're on day two of rain which is fine because everything was drying-up around here! The thunder and lightening are a bonus..I just love a good storm! LOL
I'm working on a Menu for August, eight adults and four children...if anyone has a recommendation please feel free to write, all ideas are welcome! We have two months to prepare before their arrival..so exciting and I sure hope they'll be ready for adventure! (it's going to be a big one)

Beach Baby-Beach Baby...

Good-morning everyone; I awoke to this beautiful picture of our little beach baby! This is Charlotte's very first "plane trip" and visit to Hawaii- looks like she loves it; which is great since she'll be spending lots of time there with Hawaii Grandma and Grampa!

Resting and thinking

Sitting outside on our second floor balcony this morning. Yesterday Rich and I went out and purchased a four piece patio group: couch, two chairs and a coffee table, I must say that sitting here under this canopy in the fresh air with birds singing is very relaxing!
We had a wonderful time in Salzburg last weekend. Not only did we get in some great sights but Rich did quite well in the Marathon- 26.2 mi in 4:22:29..his sixth best out of 17! This weekend is more of an R&R- catching up on a few things at home. Next weekend Chris and Linda will be here to hang-out as well....we're so blessed to have family living so close. Wow, I wish you could hear the beautiful bells going off from town; I just love them so.
Rich and I keep finding ourselves "homesick" for Germany..we were kind of waiting to see if it was just passing dream...but it's not; here we are in Switzerland living in the middle of the Alps- {and don't get me wrong, we love it here} however we find ourselves planning trips to Germany, where we feel so at home. So sometime within the next few years we plan to buy a "home" in the Bavarian area where the boy's grew up. They are just as excited about it as we are!

Salzburg

Hello everyone, tomorrow morning Rich and I will leave for Salzburg Austria. Rich- along with some friends from the Embassy will be running the Salzburg Marathon on Sunday; we decided that since our friends haven't been there before- we'd leave a few days early and show them around! Our Anna sent us her Flat Stanley which arrived yesterday...so he will be joining our team as well. Today he went to the Embassy with Rich, "I understand he's having a great time"!
We were able to Skype with everyone except Corey on Mothers Day "although he was able to call me". It was fun seeing everyone; it's been awhile. Craig, Trista and the kids are doing fine; the new Baby will "probably" arrive in February {big surprise there!} And as far as we know right now his or her name will be Reese. Shealynn and Brady are getting so tall and are excited to have a new brother or sister join the family.
Chris, Marissa and Charlotte are great. Marissa was enjoying her very first Mothers Day and Charlotte was being adorable on the camera! She'll be 6mos old when I get to hold her again, but now at 3mos she is Chris's mini me! As long as she's with her Mom and Dad- all's right with her world.
And for all of you who are asking about Corey's MCAP; he was unable to take the test as planned due to the fact that he was so focused on the studies, he neglected to "renew" his drivers license and his new passport hasn't arrived yet...so Corey was unable to provide a proper ID {this will be a story for his grandchildren} LOL However; he is rescheduled to take the test June 6th....Here's hoping all goes well!!

Here we go again

Are we having fun or what!?! Rich received a text this morning from our oldest son Craig; his wife Trista is expecting child number three!!!! Grandchild number four is on the way and as soon as we're able to speak with them I'll have more details. Needless so say- Rich and I are thrilled and pray for a safe pregnancy.
With our day being now early evening, I can say we accomplished a lot today. Rich planted all the geraniums in the window boxes-- all 45 of them! There going to look beautiful this summer. We're in for another nice weekend with temps reaching 75...nice but not hot!

Happy May

Items continue to arrive for our Fisher Family Vacation, this is truly going to be a wonderful week for everyone! And extra special will be the additional week the kid's will be giving us to explore Switzerland. Rich and I were hopeful that our two older Grandchildren would be able to stay on for a few weeks after; however with an upcoming wedding in October and due to the rising place of plane tickets..we wouldn't be able to return with the children until October. Since School begins for them in September-- it would have been an unacceptable request of us. Perhaps Halloween might be an option this year.
With the resent death of Osama Bin Laden, life around the world has become a life of being on alert, don't get me wrong, no-matter where we live we're always more attentive to details of our surroundings {although I must admit I'm not very good at this}...especially when I'm shopping; "totally oblivious to whats going on around me!" Anyway, in a perfect world all would be over-done-with...however I think everyone remains on alert for yet another shoe to drop.

FFV 2011

Well we have continued to keep busy planning our Fisher Family Vacation. Our Amazing Race only has a few "tweaks" to work out upon our arrival to Edinburgh; and the winning Team "gift" is on the way; Of course the winners will only hold it until the next race- I can't wait to see who get's it first!! The tickets to the Military Tattoo have arrived and are safely tucked away, last but not least..we have decided to go with a light jacket this year "because of the Scottish weather" They arrived on Wednesday, and are wonderful!
The Fisher Family Crest, the name Fisher under the crest, and our location and year:
On Forest Green
Draw strings on each side, breathable mesh and soft grey lining
all weather sport that will repel rain

  We even got the Grandchildren one, the only difference in theirs is: Family Crest, Place and year are centered on the back of the jacket. {it wouldn't fit on the front}
And not to worry about the size, you'll have room for a sweater underneath if you wish!
12 more weeks kids!!!

Tomorrow

Sorry for not posting for awhile- I trust everyone had a wonderful Easter; Rich and I spent the weekend in Germany with my cousin Linda and her husband Chris..we had an amazing time and being with family was a much needed gift. Chris and Marissa spent Easter with Craig and Trista so the Grandchildren were able to enjoy the day together as well..we were sent some cute pictures of the babies and will post them soon.
Today and tomorrow our thoughts are with our youngest son Corey. An amazing young man indeed! After a lot of School, Studies and preparation- he will take his MCAP tomorrow! No-matter how thing's go, Rich and I are so proud of him! We were definitely blessed with "THREE" wonderful son's and I cannot express in writing how much they mean to me. Needless to say; they are and will always be our world. Good Luck tomorrow Corey!!

Just another Spring day in Bern.

The Rocking Chair

My Grandfather Ashe made this rocking chair for my Grandmother "Theresa Charlotte Clark Ashe" in the 1920's. Grammy loved her rocker and always kept it in her big kitchen where she would have her tea and rock her babies; back then and even today many of us "live" in our kitchens. With the detail workmanship you can tell that the chair was made with patience and love. Even my Mother was rocked in this chair...sadly my Grandmother passed away from Typhoid when my Mother was just three. Not bearing to look at it sitting empty in the kitchen corner next to the wooden cooking stove- Grampa moved the chair into the barn and covered it up. When my Mother married she took a few items with her, the rocker being one of them. I remember all the times growing up, sitting in her lap- rocking while she told me stories of how Grampa built the chair and "lots" of other stories about her and her sister growing up. No-matter what my Mother was doing or how much housework she had to get done, come the early afternoon I always got to sit on my Mother's lap- rocking back and forth, listening about all the childhood stories she had to tell. I remember always feeling so safe and loved. As I grew older I would sit in the chair alone, remembering the stories and dreaming a few of my own. The older I got- the more it became my comfort; hard to explain...but just sitting in the rocker was "HUGS" As I got older...so did the chair:

It was breaking down and I couldn't bear to toss it out....Rich knew how much this rocker meant to me, so he asked around at the Embassy and was told about this man who does re-finishing. He met with him, showed him the chair and told him how important it was not to "re-do" but preserve the chair. He even complimented my Grandfathers work by saying how much time he must have put into the chair, noticing that the arms were just one piece of wood that had been soaked and bent over time."Rockers are not made like this anymore"Well, it took awhile but I finely got my Rocker back

When I first saw it, it took my breath away...then there was panic..."my Grandfathers chair...what have we done!?!
I took me almost all day; but I finely sat down in the chair and slowly began to rock. Closing my eyes- it was all coming back and they are STILL there....My hugs from the past.

Last weekend

My cousin Linda and her husband Chris arrived on Friday evening to spend the weekend, Rich and I really enjoy their company and as always; it's great to sit-relax and catch-up on our lives! They live in Stuttgart Germany so we're just three hours from each other. It was a beautiful weekend with the temps in the 70's, so we had decided to do the Open Air Market in Bern...and then to take them up the Gurten to view the Alps.

April 1st

I woke this morning to sunshine, birds singing and a hot cup of coffee; I had to give thought to family and Friends in the North East who are bracing for a big Northeaster winter storm today. I guess the saying: The grass is always greener in your neighbors yard, could be true....but I always add: until you get there and find they have too many holes. Bottom line? Enjoy where you are and make it a wonderful place to "hang-out" Your either getting together with neighbors to create a wonderful "late winter" meal or your enjoying an early evening Barbecue with friends. But don't just sit there and sulk your life away! There are so many disasters happening in the world right now; If you have a home, untainted food and drink and there are no bombs going off all around you...your FINE!! So enjoy...you never know when it will be taken away. And while your taking time to enjoy the falling snow or a walk on a beautiful Spring day, Please send up a prayer for those who aren't as lucky as you are. Happy April 1st everyone.

My gosh

I just found out that Son number one "Craig" and his wife Trista are planning Baby number three!!! I've always wished that I could have had more children...now I'm receiving them as Grandchildren, I couldn't be happier...soon to be four and counting! When Corey was little he promised me Twelve Grandchildren just from him; {is that still the plan Corey?} I have to tell you, as a Mother; there's something very special watching the children "you raised" being a parent. It's happy tears! Our Grandparent Camp will be so much fun!!!
Rich and I are so Blessed!
Speaking of the big-guy, he had his special x-rays last week, and all went well. He said it wasn't as bad as he thought it would be. I was able to go into the room and sit with him between pictures; the Dr and nurses seemed surprised that I was staying the two hours. They kept telling me I could leave and come back..finely I just said: "he's my husband, I'm staying" they were very nice about it! Now we're waiting for his Dr to look over the results and call us, to me...it's the hardest part of Medical Procedures. In a perfect world- we'd have the answers within the hour.
Charlotte is doing fine, she did however have an eye infection that prevented her from getting her first shots. The Dr placed her on Antibiotics and told Marissa is the problem persists..when she turns ONE they will have to do surgery. We're praying that it clears up on it's own. I've noticed in pictures that her hair is turning blonde and she has the most incredible blue eyes with long lashes....Chris said that she also has "this pout" that she does; Now correct me if I'm wrong...but isn't is MY responsibility " as her Grand Mother to  "TEACH" her how to use these "gifts" properly???!!! Chris tells me NOOOOOO...don't you dare!!! But, I think she needs me on this..since I DO have experience and was pretty good at it myself! Anyone have advise?

March is marching on

As most of you know, Rich had back surgery several years ago for a disk problem. Although he felt much better- he has "always" complained about pain and has taken Motrin like candy. Although he runs everyday, his "walk" has become bent to whatever position it takes to alleviate the pain. Living here in the "The best Medical capital...they are always on top of  new/better ways" Rich was sent to one of the best Neurosurgeons in Bern. After reviewing his previous x-rays he wants to perform a few more. So next Wednesday Rich will have a:
Myelogram (also known as myelography) is a diagnostic tool that uses radiographic contrast media (dye) that is injected into the spinal canal’s fluid (cerebrospinal fluid, CSF). After the dye is injected, the contrast dye serves to illuminate the spinal canal, cord, and nerve roots during imaging. He's not looking forward to this at all; however we're both excited about a possible fix for his pain! I will be Blogging about his procedures, diagnosis and journey to recovery. My Marathon Man is taking on a new challenge!

Fun at Farching

When we arrived things were quite
The town became so full, one could not even walk without "hugging" the people next to you.
We enjoyed the evening and Saturday decided to do some "much needed shopping" in Heidelberg. My laptop computer was old and slow so my husband replaced it with this cute little Toshiba mini. Now keep in mind that while in the US we purchased Apple I-Pads which are just amazing!! With all our travel and moving- it's very nice to be able to send our heavy books into storage and download books to the I-pad; it's also great for keeping in touch while in mid-move, plus packs right in our carry on. The I-Pad dosen't do "EVERYTHING" the computer can do so this mini was just right; plus it has built in web cam so I can now do Skype. {and easy to move with}
We also now have a "Magic Jack" which enables us to call our boy's for free, and they can call us without making an overseas phone call! Of course if you have a Magic Jack as well...we can talk for FREE!!! My cousin Linda- who lives in Germany is now a very happy lady! {So is Rich...it's going to save our phone bill} LOL The kitchen cuboards and freezer are now replenished; I picked up everything I need to "Spring Clean" the house and with our new bed covering on the way everything will be fresh, clean and bright. Almost time to bid Winter Ado!

Bern’s Fasnacht Celebrations

Fest days began officially last night at 8pm with the setting-free of the Bern Bear. Hundreds of people "young and old" dressed in costumes much like {our Halloween} crowed the streets to attend and celebrate. Today in the Munster Church courtyard is the childrens medieval fair. Tomorrow will be the afternoon parade through the town. Rich has been taking pictures so, as soon as there downloaded I'll post for all to see.

Part 2

When we arrived at Craig and Trista's they had planed  two tours for us. The first day was to the Exploratorium, definitely a place for all ages:
how sail size matters
Interesting...
Keeping the beat
Vibrating sand
but they have no step ladders Grandma!
Finely caught up with everyone!

Our next trip was to the Jelly Belly Factory to see how the candy is made.
The only picture we got! They did not allow cameras inside :((  However we had a great time!
